September has been filled with fun and excitement. Early on, we studied weather. The students explored different types of precipitation by making paper garments, dampening them and waiting to see what happened. They had to guess whether the clothes would be wet or dry the next morning and explain their reasoning. Many were very surprised to find them dry the next day, with no water under them. We also weighed water in both liquid and frozen form. The children were astonished to discover that it weighed the same either way! We also put thermometers in ice water and then pressed them between our hands to see the different temperature readings.
Social Studies will kick off this week with the study of land forms, such as mountains, rivers, valleys, etc. For math, we moved on to addition and subtraction within ten. We started a gumball math contest where the students earn jelly beans for outstanding work on their time tests. We are learning different strategies for addition, like counting on and part-part-whole. Every Wednesday is word-problem Wednesday. The students are learning to identify key words, draw the problem and then solve it. In reading, we have split into guided reading groups. This allows the students to work at their own ability levels. At the moment we are reading Piggy and Elephant books and they made a Piggy and Elephant craft on Friday using paper plates and tissue paper. We have also read The Three Billy Goats Gruff, My Mouth is a Volcano, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and many more. We've studied character, setting and identifying key key details. Next week we are identifying fiction and non-fiction. In writing we are exploring the writing technique where the children learn to add detail and describe small moments in their lives. Next week we will combine their small moments to create a big moment. The username and passwords for IXL and RAZKIDS are stapled on the second page of your student's agenda. A big Thank You to Mrs. Brickey for kindly offering to be the room mom for this year. COGAT Testing begins Tuesday, September 13th and ends Thursday the 15th. Please make sure your children come to school on time and have a good nights rest.
