Each morning starts with play. Each of the four tables gets a different play set; Lego, Cube Construction, Patterns and Tinker Toys. These are rotated through the tables each day. This gives the children an opportunity to get to know each other and learn how to work together. It also improves their fine motor skills and gets them involved in the day.
This week we started breaking into centers. Centers divide the kids into groups, so some groups can work independently, reinforcing concepts covered earlier. This allows me to teach a small group, while the others practice what they were previously taught. A couple of math centers this week were bingo, rolling to 120 and placing numbers in order using Play-dough and flags. Some English centers this week included the listening center, where the kids listen to a story on the computer and draw pictures and write sentences about the main character and Squiggle Stories, where the kids tell a story about a squiggle on a paper. We introduced the spelling center, where the children used magnetic letters to spell words. Then they wrote sentences using the words. Poetry was introduced to explore rhyming words and alliteration. We are also learning about direct speech using speech bubbles. On Friday, Tracker Tim came to class and brought us a pet fish, which we are looking forward to naming. He also stayed and read us the book, "Interrupting Chicken". The children really enjoyed the visit. On Thursday evening, August 18 at 6:00PM, we are having our Open House. All parents are encouraged to attend as we will be going over expectations for the year. Homework will begin on Monday. Further clarification will be shared at the Open House.

The first week of school was filled with the adventures of learning who and where everything was. The first day the students learned where they were supposed to sit and what happened in all the various parts of the classroom. They met their teacher and their classmates. They learned how they were supposed to act and where they were supposed to go. They also learned about all the exciting centers in the classroom, like the reading center, the math center and the phonics center. They also learned their places at their tables and the colored spaces at the front of the room by the white board.
We learned some new songs this week, like "Tidy Up", "Write Your Name on the Paper" and "Rise and Shine". Singing is a great way for the students to learn how to handle their new responsibilities. We also spent some time with actual lessons. We reviewed how to count to 120, worked with letters, made paper rabbits and reviewed a number of things they probably already knew. This was a great opportunity to remember how school works and how to get along with their class mates. We also learned about acting in the cafeteria, how to find the right way home and how to get around the school. All in all, it was a busy week filled with many new adventures. We had hoped to get a visit from a school friend, Tracker Tim. Unfortunately, he was not able to come this week, but did send a treasure chest to the class. Each week, exceptionally good students will be allowed to select a treasure from the chest. The children were very excited to see the treasure chest and see the treasures inside. |
