I hope you all had a festive Saint Patrick's Day! This week is the beginning of the 4th quarter, the last bit of first grade for all of these incredibly sweet children. Most of this quarter will be spent on review and building on the skills that the students have learned, in order to give them a solid grounding for second grade. Please expect their report cards in their blue folders on Thursday the 23rd. This Friday the 24th we will be going to the High Museum for a much anticipated field trip. This will be an incredible experience as the children learn so much and are also given an opportunity to experience some hands on arts and crafts. This Friday the 24th will also be the much anticipated 60th celebration of Sedalia Park. It starts at 7:00 pm and promises to be a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing you there! Spring Break is from the 3rd of April to the 7th of April.

I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful Winter Break. The children have all returned with happy smiles and lots of news. In writing we continue to work on opinion writing and book reviews. The children have done an outstanding job and I have enjoyed watching them. In Math we are now working on double digit addition with regrouping. This is done using manipulatives so that the children can see how to exchange 10 ones for a ten. Most of the students are making good progress and we will continue to review this for a few more days. In Science we are studying the parts of a plant and the needs of a plant. The children had fun looking at plants and identifying the roots, stem, leaves and flower. Important Dates: March 2nd - Dr Seuss Day. The children can wear red, white and black to celebrate this occasion. March 9th - 1st Grade Performance. Please have your child to my classroom at 6:15. Their will be a short PTA meeting followed by a performance. March 10th - Picture Day and Taste of The Park. April 28th - Center for Puppetry Arts. Please return the donation and permission slip. We have had a wonderful and productive week.
In math we have continued to work with addition and subtraction with regrouping. The children are learning to exchange ten ones for a ten rod. They really seem to be understanding this concept and progress has been made. In ELA we are working on opinion writing, and the students wrote a delightful piece on their worst vegetable. These were very entertaining. In reading they have been discovering the joy of multi-meaning words and have had fun playing with these in sentences. Science has been wonderful as we have been discovering that light travels in a straight line. The children have experimented with flashlights and have had fun making shadow puppets. Next Tuesday is Valentine's Day and we will be doing a Valentine's Day exchange during the last 15 minutes of the day. Please feel free to share the love on this special holiday. |
